We already covered the issue of the infant found in a trash can in South Bend, but I perused this article anyway. I am glad I did.
It has some information I found very interesting. I have tried to make it clear exactly what parents can expect when they relinquish their parental rights to a Safe Haven. Yes, the official may ask some questions, especially relating to medical history, but it is purely for the benefit of the child and the parent will remain anonymous. I think this may be the part where many parents – especially teen parents- become afraid that they will be in trouble. The only way to relieve their anxiety is make sure they have all of the information about the laws.
The staff member may also assist that parent with referrals for legal advice, counseling, domestic violence, and medical assistance. Then, after the parent leaves, Child Protective Services is notified. During this time the person who accepts the transfer is “exempt from civil or criminal prosecution for their humanitarian gesture.”
