Today’s article again demonstrates how effective Safe Haven Laws are. When it is publicized that a newborn has been left at a safe haven, people line up to be able to adopt the child. Some of these parents are unable to have children of their own, but some simply want to ensure the health and well-being of unwanted babies.
I would like to remind everyone that any child given to a safe haven will not be adopted for at least 30 days. During that time, the parents may change their minds and take back their parental rights. I think this is an important stipulation. Many new parents feel very overwhelmed by parenthood initially and may even do something to harm their new child. Yet, they may not give the child up if the decision was permanent. Because they are able to think about the decision for 30 days, parents have time to cool off and seek help.
