Back in 2004 this girl, Ashley Truitt, denying she was pregnant all along, gave birth on vacation and threw the baby down a 7 story garbage chute.  She is currently serving 13 years for aggravated manslaughter.

Now she is serving her time and promotes Safe Haven laws, but I was not a fan of what she said in the article.  She said she was not aware of Safe Haven laws.  I do not think anyone really considers this justification for killing a child.  Had she known about Safe Haven, maybe the situation would be different, but that baby was still a person.  She had to have known that murder of any person, regardless of how old they are, is just wrong.  Knowledge of a the law is not an excuse.

The second part of the article I would like to comment on is that “some legislators fear that ‘if you promote this law, you are promoting irresponsible sexual activity.’”  After seeing day after day all of these babies dying, how can anyone still hold this opinion?  I truly cannot imagine anyone hearing about Safe Haven laws, then deciding to go ahead and have sex, deal with pregnancy for nine months, and then go through the agony of delivery just because they know that they can give the baby up anonymously.  It’s just not logical.
