As of the time that this article is being written, Wisconsin has the shortest Safe Haven window in the country. For those of you not familiar with Safe Haven laws, it means that parents who are unwilling or unable to care for newborn babies can drop them off at an approved location like a hospital or fire station with no questions asked. Most states have at least a 30 day window for parents to make that decision. Wisconsin’s is 3. Bit strange, no?
Wisconsin has actually had one of the best responses to save haven. While we see continual child abandonment and very few Safe Haven success stories in some states, Wisconsin has saved about 125 children. They either have more publicity about the laws themselves or people are reminded of them while these success stories stay in the news. Either way, regardless of how well it is working, it is still a good idea to expand this time limit. Two Wisconsin senators agree and are working on it.
