Kiyana Higgins, 23

Three women were indicted in Pima County for the death of a 1-year-old baby girl.  The women are her mother Kiyana Higgins, 23, aunt Keshawna Higgins, 25, and grandmother Clara Huyghue, 53.

The little girl weighed less than 15 pounds which was caused by malnutrition.  For comparison, 15 pounds is the average weight for a baby girl that is about 4 to 5 months old.  Initial charges of second-degree murder were dropped so that prosecutors could indict them for first-degree.  There is a major difference between the two classifications.  First degree murder includes the possibility of a death sentence, but it is unlikely the prosecutor will seek it in this case.  Conversely, second degree murder convictions could be punishable with only probation.

I am very curious to hear what the women have to say in this case.  I will be sure to post an update when I do.
