A letter to the editor of The Kansas City Star, struck a chord with me today. The part that really got to me was that she said it is unfortunate that everyone is not aware of the Safe Haven Laws in their state. Unfortunate? Really? I would have to say it is impossibly despicable that children continue to die because people are unaware of how they can protect these babies.
I suppose if I think about it, the situation is unfortunate. Perhaps the issue is too close to me to objectively look at how it is possible anyone in this country does not know about this issue. It seems logical to me that anyone who watches the news on occasion, picks up a newspaper once in a while, or even browses the internet on a regular basis would know there is an alternative to abandoning an infant in an unsafe location. BUT THERE IS. The majority of the women we talk about here at One By One Safe Haven who have left their children in fields, parking lots, or public bathrooms seem absolutely oblivious to the fact that they could have left their child at a hospital without fear of getting into trouble for it. The only way we can change this is with YOUR help. Please help us. Please help the babies.
