Our second article today is in regards to Safe Haven Laws themselves. In some states, mothers are required to show identification and submit to questioning before they can place their child with the Safe Haven location. Some say this actually defeats the purpose of the laws. If the mothers are too scared to submit to questioning at a hospital, they may abandon the baby in an unsafe location instead. I see both sides of this debate.
One the one hand, they are absolutely correct. Some young mothers afraid of prosecution have probably been too afraid to let the Safe Haven have their name and medical history while giving up their parental rights. On the other hand, this would not be a problem if we could successfully spread the word about the purpose of Safe Haven Laws. If these young mothers knew beforehand that they will not have to fear any criminal charges as long as they leave the at an approved location, there would be no issue. There would be no reason for them to be afraid if these mothers knew that the questioning is simply for the benefit of the child. I would think most of these parents would want to do at least that much for these babies. After all, they are already acknowledging that they cannot care for their babies like they deserve to be cared for by finding a Safe Haven for them. It is certainly an interesting article, though.
