Today’s article is about a baby that was abandoned a few months ago in Horry County, SC.  He is alive and well and there was no controversy surrounding his being left at a local hospital.  So why am I sharing it with you?  I wanted to share this article with you today to demonstrate the necessity of Safe Haven Laws and also prove their effectiveness.  This article explicitly stated that they are not looking for the parents and they need fear no criminal prosecution for leaving the infant at the hospital.  The law worked exactly as designed in this case: the parents remain anonymous and the baby was placed in no danger.

Furthermore, the state average for infant abandonment under the Safe Haven Law is only 2 per year.  Some opponents of the laws state that they encourage parents to give up their responsibilities.  This is just not true.  The law was set in place only to protect these unwanted babies from harm.
