A city in New York has proposed new legislation requiring high schools to educate students on how to properly relinquish parental rights to unwanted babies. One thing I had not seen before that I found in this article is that there is a hotline that young women can dial to discuss their options if they have an unwanted pregnancy: 1-888-510-BABY.
This actually surprises me. Through all of my research on abandoned newborns I never knew this hotline existed. It should definitely be publicized more. For a lot of women who do not know about Safe Haven Laws or understand their options, an anonymous hotline would be a lot easier than going into a hospital and trusting a stranger.
I also think it is a fantastic idea to talk about Safe Haven Laws in high schools. A lot of the newborns who are abandoned in unsafe locations are put there by young mothers who think they have no other choice. This is a long time coming.
