This article brings up another point about Safe Haven Laws. In Pennsylvania alone, there are 250 hospitals that are Safe Haven drop-off sites for unwanted newborns. This does even include other locations like fire departments and police stations.
Given the prevalence of these safe locations, one would think they would be utilized. Unfortunately, that is not the case. It takes money to keep campaigns going that keep information on these laws circulating and most states have more programs that need funding than actual funds.
Many young women who harm their babies say that they had never been told about Safe Haven Laws and feared that they would get into trouble if anyone found out they had had a child. In fact, a baby can be dropped off completely anonymously as long the child shows no sign of abuse. Many safe havens do request medical history, but this is purely to benefit the child in the future. It is not used against the parent.
