This article has more information on the case involving the baby killed by its father with a cinderblock.  You can click here to read the explicit details, but the bottom line is this child did not have to die just because it was unwanted by the parents.

The article also brings up another interesting point about Safe Haven Laws.  Although many states have age limits for what children can be dropped-off under their Safe Haven Laws, because of the confidentiality stipulation, no child can be turned down.  This is because a child’s exact age is hard to pinpoint.  Who is to say whether the child actually is 3 days old?

The age limit was set up, at least in part, so that children will not suffer abuse before eventually being handed over to a Safe Haven location.  As long as the child has been well-cared for, the parents will not get in trouble for relinquishing their parental rights by handing over a child.

Safe Haven’s 24-hour hotline is 877-839-2339 and the Parents Anonymous “stressline” is 800-843-5437.
