Councilman Frank Hotchkiss

This article reports on the expanding of Safe Haven Laws in Santa Barbara.  Instead of just hospitals, they will now allow fire stations to be safe havens, like many other states.

What I do not like about this article is the opinion of Councilman Frank Hotchkiss.  He was opposed to the increase in safe havens because he thinks it will make it too easy for mothers to abandon their children.  I have one main argument for this.  Would he rather these children end up in dumpsters like so many others we have reported on?  Does it really matter that it makes it easier for these mothers to give up their children?  I do not think that adding more locations to ensure the safety of these babies is going to persuade more parents to give up their children.  I am happy that those who were going to do it anyway, will now have an easier job of keeping these infants safe.
