Wow. Today’s article has some statistics that actually surprised me.
It initially talks about how Illinois has expanded Safe Haven locations to include university police stations, which we have already reported on. They then mention that in the decade since Safe Haven was adopted in Illinois, 69 babies were saved by a safe haven location. Unfortunately, almost as many, 62, were illegally abandoned and only 32 are still alive.
It also states that the average parent who abandons their baby is an older Caucasian woman. This surprises me. Most of the stories that I report on are about poor, teenage, African-American girls. I do not know why these girls would be reported more than others. It does make sense though when you think about it. Minorities are more likely to be impoverished. A poor young girl has much less to lose than a wealthy, older woman by becoming an unwed mother.
