Wisconsin teen Nadia Zahirudin, 17, was sentenced for a case of child abandonment that occurred last May. Instead of taking her newborn to a nearby hospital, she elected to leave it by a church dumpster instead. Fortunately for the baby and for her, the baby survived. She did receive three years of probation, however. Three years of probation is certainly not the worst sentence she could have received, but it is not an easy one either. One small slip and she will go to jail for her mistake.
The father in this case, Benjamin LaMarche, 18, will be sentenced soon for his part in the incident. Both could have escaped any punishment simply by leaving the child safely with a hospital employee.
