A mother recognized that she was unable to care for her newborn and left it in the care of a family member. I was confused at first as to why the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services would have a problem with this. They said a new parent cannot leave their child with just anyone. It seems to me that people can become parents without ever proving that they are fit to do so, so what’s the problem? In fact, the mother failed a drug test, so wouldn’t a relative be better?
Well, the problem in this case is that the woman, Jamie Burcham, left her baby with a relative who had already been arrested for child neglect and abuse previously. Aha. Thankfully, the baby is fine and will hopefully find a loving home very soon thanks to DCS workers.
