Both of today’s articles come from Parent Dish.  Both are prime examples of why we need to make sure we get the word out so that people understand Safe Haven laws.  First, a baby was left outside a fire station in Houston.  This may seem to be a victory for safe haven laws, but several facets of the incident make this story one of almost absolute failure.

First, the infant was not left in the care of an employee of the facility.  This is dangerous for a variety of reasons.  The infant could be picked up by someone not affiliated with the fire station and unimaginable things could happen.  Second, as in this case, the infant could be subjected to 94 degree weather and ant bites before anyone at the fire station found him.  This brings up an interesting question.  Should the parent be prosecuted?  On the one hand, they did not intentionally harm the baby and did attempt to follow to law.  One the other hand, much worse could have happened if the baby had not been found when it was.  What do you think?  Please leave us a comment.

The second article I have for you today makes me unbearably sad.  A 2-year-old little boy was abandoned at a Wal-Mart in Indiana.  The boy was carrying a note and a backpack and would not speak.  This is beyond unacceptable.  First, a Wal-Mart is not an acceptable place to leave a child that you can no longer take care of.  Second, most states do not include toddlers under the umbrella of their Safe Haven laws.  If the mother thought she was doing what was best for the child, she should have done a little bit of research to find out a better way to make sure he would be safe.
