A few weeks ago, I am sure you all remember the teenager Laquasia Wright, 18, who threw her infant down a garbage chute. Now school administrators in the area are considering making sex education mandatory to prevent further tragedies like this one.
It is far too late for this girl who is being charged with attempted second degree murder and endangering the welfare of a child, but it may help many young girls in the future. It seems strange to me that there are still schools in this country that are not teaching sex education. History has proven time and time again that only teaching abstinence or ignoring the issue entirely is not an effective way of preventing teenage pregnancy. I very much hope that the school district does follow through on this. I hope all school districts will learn from this issue and step up to protect children.
